Sail and Sink 01/16/2012

Last week I finally had the courage to log into my brothers Email and Facebook accounts. Even in death you still respect thier privacy but with all that has been going on with the situation I finally decided it was time and am I glad I did.

There are lots of messages from all the girls he met on his travels (I respected the fact that they were sent after his death and did not read them) but I was more interested in the messages about this expedition.

I came accross this is one particular message.

I have underlined  the 2 sentences of importance in this mail, firstly that there would be a TON of equipment onboard the Berserk . Surely, that is way to much equipment to have on board a 14 meter steel yacht heading into the most dangerous waters in the Antarctic Ocean.

Secondly, and most shocking is the purchase of a boat and I quote “Find a boat that we can sail and SINK.” I know for a fact that they did not purchase this second boat and that they did not rent any other vessel for this expedition.  So Andhoy at the time of departure from New Zealand was fully aware that his boat was overladen, he was short handed as a few crew and sponsors as they say 'Jumped Ship' knowingly set sail, putting his crew lives at risk all in the quest for his fame and fortune.

I have to say that I agree with what Nina its written. Jarle cant be blamed for that the boat is gone.It was 3 grown up guys in the boat, took a decision that no one understands. Why they left a "safe" space, is a question in itself? Jarle was not on board at the boat, he was not captain, (this time from what I understand). He started the trip and is the owner of the boat. The tasks were distributed, belief that they all agreed. Otherwise, they should not have joined. He is an adventurer, and have dreams to become reality. None of the guys were forced to join the trip. Everyone who join the trip quickly realize that this is a television entertainment. We all know that.. Thats Jarle´s way to do things. Don´t blame him for your brother loss or the 2 other guys. I believe that he have big problems regarding and accept what has happened, just like you do. Is there anyone who should be blamed for this tragedy, it must be the Forces of Nature. Think "you" should "throw in the towel" and stand together in this difficult time. No one is more guilty than the others. They boarded the boat and knew what could be the worst that could happen on the trip. Naive... I would not believe none of them were. None of them are God with special gifts. the Tv series that now runs on Norwegian television. Is one of the best entertainment that can be displayed when the "boys on an adventure". It focuses on the history of the places they visited and the experiences, humor and community that the boys themselves have. There is no entertainment of the boys' death. What I have understood the last episode will be "facts" about what happened on 22 february. You should talk with Jarle, and ask to see his earlier movies and this one. You will get a completely different impression. I Sorry to say this.... I don´t want to take anyone's side, but I feel that it should be fair ... The loss of your brother will never be gone, the grief will be there forever. Enjoy what you had and find out how his last days were. Perhaps there will come a peace in the grief .. I speak from experience ... Wish you all the best..for the future and what it will bring...

I must most strongly dissagree with you both.
There is one man that is to blame, and that is the "Captain" the selfproclimed god and ideamaker behind this trip: Andhøy.
This last episode did not give any more answers than it produced questions. This is only Andhøys way of trying to defend him self.

Andhøy decided at one point that it was a good ide to sail to the Antarctica. Perhaps since the tv ratings was down after all his stupid tricks in the arctic oceans.
He also decided that it was a good ide to do this without any insurace and permits. And against all the advices he got from all the ecperianced sailors from the antactic ocean. Like Mc Intyre and Nowak.
And in his wisdom he also did not follow the guidance from the engelish pilotbook stating that his choice of harbouring was not good enoguh. He (Andhøy) Has never sailed here before, nor had none of the others. Massie was just a kid 18years old. So to go here for the first time, with a small boat, overloaded( 10tons) and with a crew that did not know each other that well, and was not trained for a trip like this, it was a disaster just waiting to happen.
And even thou none of the crew was forced onboard, i am pretty sure they all trusted Andhøy in knowing what he was doing. Sadly he did not, And even more sadly 3 good men died because of this.

It is very easy to tell someboduy what to do in an emergancy, when you do not have to be abord. And since he did not know the waters, all of his commands for the three men left onboard berserk could and was wrong.

When you enter an airplane, you trust that the captain knows what to do? And knows where he is going? Or do you think that if the plane chrashes you only have to blame yourself, because nobdy forced you on the plane. I have read that statement so many times, and that is the most redicilous statement i have ever read. Andhøy is the brain behind this trip, it was his idea, it was he who planned this and it was him and him alone that had the overall responsebility for the ship, equippement and the crew.
The tvserie is a 9 episode long defence of what he have done. But after the last episod, i am left behind with more questions than answers. And i am more convinced that he was wrong, and should not have done this.

Adventure is always a risky buisiness, but there are ways of minimalizing the obvious risks. Like having a good ship, good equippement, well trained crew and an experienced captain. He had none of this!
And this is only what happened on the water.

The attempt to reach the polepoint with atv`s is a whole other story. And sadly enough, if the ship had not sunk, Andhøy and the kid probably would die in their idiotic attempt.
So, this trip could not have had an happy ending. And Andhøy is trying to find answers anyplace but where the answers are, in his head.

So i agre with Charlene in her critics of the sharlatan called Andhøy. And in my opinion he should have been dragged into the court where he had do defend himself and his choices.

I am not against adventures or living out ones dreams, but there are ways of doing it as safely as possible. And not in Andhøys case, as dangerous as possible. Even thou it looks better on tv.....

I completely agree with nina here. no one has more to blame for this. everyone knew that they could die in such a dangerous expedition. Jarle is very sad that this happened. I know you lost your brother, but this was pathetic. and no I do not mean to be disrespectful. RIP Tom Gisle, Robert and Leonard!
